KIST Teaching Hospital to Bring Healthcare Services to Patients’ Homes Through ‘KIST At Home’

Lalitpur / KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital is set to launch ‘KIST At Home’, a home-based healthcare service aimed at bringing quality medical care closer to patients.

The hospital is launching the service in collaboration with Health at Home Nepal. Under the initiative, the hospital’s clinical expertise, trained healthcare professionals, laboratory and diagnostic services, clinical governance and necessary healthcare support will be extended to patients at their homes.

‘KIST At Home’ will operate as an integrated healthcare unit of KIST Teaching Hospital, providing continuity of care before, during and after treatment.

The service will include home nursing care, doctor home visits, physiotherapy, elderly care, post-operative care, home sample collection, chronic disease management, palliative care, vaccination, caregiver services, teleconsultation and follow-up services.

It will also provide medical equipment rental, home ICU and critical care support, as well as patient transportation services.

The initiative will also include pre-hospital services. In emergency situations, patients will be transported to the hospital through ambulance or other patient transportation services according to their medical needs. Patients receiving home-based care who require further treatment will also be connected to hospital-based services.

According to the hospital, receiving healthcare services at home will not disconnect patients from KIST Teaching Hospital’s clinical care network. Consultants, medical officers, nursing staff and other technical personnel can be mobilized when required.

Under the home sample collection service, blood and other medical samples collected from patients’ homes will be tested at the KIST Teaching Hospital laboratory, with reports provided to the patients. Patients’ health records will be managed through the hospital’s Health Information Management System (HIMS), while maintaining confidentiality.

KIST Teaching Hospital Managing Director Dr. Abhishek Thapa said the initiative was introduced with the objective of reducing the need for patients to visit the hospital for services that can be safely provided at home.

«“Our objective is to reduce the burden on patients of having to visit the hospital and make essential healthcare services available at their homes. Through KIST At Home, we are connecting the hospital’s clinical expertise, trained healthcare professionals and laboratory services with home-based care,” Dr. Thapa said.»

He said the service would particularly benefit patients recovering after treatment, senior citizens, people living with chronic diseases and those requiring regular nursing and healthcare support.

«“Even while receiving care at home, patients will remain connected to KIST Teaching Hospital’s healthcare network. Depending on their needs, specialist doctors, medical officers, nurses and other healthcare professionals can be mobilized,” he said.»

The hospital expects the initiative to strengthen the connection between hospital-based and home-based healthcare, particularly for post-operative recovery, elderly care, chronic disease management, physiotherapy, palliative care and regular nursing services.

Through ‘KIST At Home’, KIST Teaching Hospital aims to extend its quality healthcare services beyond the hospital premises and closer to patients’ homes.
